Thief Missions

In my spare time over the years, I’ve made a number of fan missions for Thief 2: The Metal Age (pretty much the all-time high watermark for stealth games). If you have a copy of that game (available on Steam or GOG.com for a few pennies), feel free to download and play my missions and let me know what you think.

Catacombs of Knoss (released Nov 2018) – this two mission pack was created for a contest to celebrate Thief: The Dark Project’s 20th Anniversary. It placed 4th out of 23 entries. The challenge with this mission was to create a fun and interesting experience using only the game’s original resources, which meant a lot of creative repurposing of objects, textures and sound effects.

Behind Closed Doors (released Feb 2017) – this mission is a large city mission with many enterable buildings, with an ominous sunset glow to everything. The story is more of a bunch of unconnected subplots, but the exercise was to create a fun city space with lots of vertical gameplay.

Death’s Turbid Veil (released 2014) – a horror story set in and around a mansion, designed to take full advantage of the New Dark unofficial patch for Thief that removes a lot of limitations such as polycount and texture resolution.

Sturmdrang Peak (released 2013) – This is a six-mission campaign that offers about 4-6 hours of gameplay featuring pirates, betrayal, tropical islands, pirates, a castle, romance, underground caves, pirates, ruined temples, and pirates…

Whispers in the Desert (released 2009) – a remake/semi-sequel to an earlier mission I made. It’s a Tomb Raider/Indiana Jones-style adventure through an Egyptian-themed tomb complex, filled with traps and shambling mummies.

Memoirs of a Dead God (released 2008) – a two-mission mansion robbery with some strange twists… This was my attempt to make a level where you revisit the same place twice, but it provides completely different gameplay the second time around. Looking back now, there are some frustrating design issues, mostly to do with the complete lack of flow in the mansion layout.

Vampire Skull (released 2008) – I made this to challenge myself to knock up a functioning Thief mission in a weekend, for the 10th anniversary of Thief 1 (I think!). It’s pretty crappy overall, but it does at least function! 🙂

Island of Madness (released 2007) – this was my entry to a Horror Contest. I think it came second in the end, but looking back, it’s not particularly horrifying, except to me – what was I thinking with that music?

A Pirate’s Downfall (released 2006) – this was my first attempt to make a mansion-based Thief mission. The plot is basically an excuse to hunt around a big mansion with some underground smuggler’s caves for valuable artifacts. I had a lot of fun making this, although it looks pretty ropey now.

From Beneath the Sands (released 2006) – this is the mission that I later remade as Whispers in the Desert. This one’s pretty popular with Thief mission fans, although I think that’s probably more due to the (at the time) unique setting rather than any great marvels of gameplay. It’s definitely less forgiving than Whispers – for some reason I thought a maze filled with invisible teleporters would be a good design decision.

Treason and Plot (released 2006) – this was my first released Thief mission, and it shows. It’s a functional little jaunt through some caves filled with thieves, made in a couple of weeks after I’d got to grips with the editor, mainly just to prove to myself that I could finish and release a level.
